If you are buying from a reputable breeder(which is a 1 in a million chance since you are here asking this question and its about a pit) then they should be the ones to inform you of all your puppy needs. In fact, they wouldn't even sell you a dog without making sure you had the proper supplies and knowledge.

A crate, obedience classes, LOTS of toys, a high quality dog food(dogfoodanalysis.com) and TONS of socialization. Those things are most important.I am looking for help from people that know about dogs and know what type of advice to give a new dog owner.?
puppy kibble - where are you getting the pup? actual breeders will usually provide a small supply of kibble that they feeding the pup so you can blend it in with your own so ease the pup over to the new food. If you want your pup looking good, avoid the major retail brands and go to a smaller pet supply store and look for the high quality stuff - ask around for suggestions - canidae is affordable and a good brand. feed three times a day on a consistent schedule - pup usually poop right after so within that 15 minutes of finishing up the food, take the pup outside to do his business.

2. an area for the pup to sleep - bedding, you may want to invest on a large crate for training purpose later, the crate should come with a divider, divide the crate so that it's big enough for the pup to sleep only - if it's too big he will pee and poop in there - pup usually can start holding their bladder at 12 weeks - that's when i put them in, i don't want them getting use to peeing and pooping in there because they can't hold it - then it'll take longer to train.

3. a few chew toys - avoid raw hides until the adult teeth are in. play with him so he knows wat to do with the toys, dogs are not born to know what these fluffy things are meant for.

4. puppy shampoo, u don't have to bathe him often or the skin will get dry.

5. take to the vet immediately to get a health check - make sure your pup is health, up to date with vaccines, and get additional advice for a first time owner.

6. After bordatella shots, you can enroll him in puppy classes, a good way socialize him with other dogs without the fear of him contracting something at the park - usually do not bring a pup to a park until it has all the.
If you are serious about buying ';me'; a pit bull, you had better start with insurance, then a very high fenced yard that is wired, a super strong leash and collar if you intend to walk the dog--they need a lot of exercise. But...my advice is to select another type of dog. Not even sure you can get household/renter insurance if you have a pit bull. Check that out before you buy this breed.
First of never give a dog chocolate!! just making that clear. Feed your dog 2 times a day take it on long walks like 3-4 times a day dont give it alot of human food buy a collar and bed and all that stuff buy it dog treats if you want to teach it tricks or obdience give the dog a treat when ever it does something good when trying to teach it a trick be patient and reward him good luck the dog might take a leak in your house the first day you have to make sure the dog knows that is bad so it wont do it again umm thats the basics
Lots of toys (so he doesn't get bored) Food prescribed by the breeder/volunteers, feed him at least once or twice a day (morning, night but as it gets older, reduce it to once a day)

Comfortable collar, a special place to sit (bed, couch) anything that makes him comfortable and happy.

And a space for him to run around, it seems like male dogs have a lot more energy and it'd be best to let them be outside then running a muck in your house xD
American Pit Bull Terriers are not a breed that's recommended for first-time dog owners.

If you get this breed, please invest in a quality trainer to help you be the best owner for the dog, help the dog be the best dog for you, as well.

Feeding schedules will differ. I know some people who free-feed their dogs, and others who give their dogs 2-3 meals a day.

You'll want a leash, collar, food/water bowls, dog crate *if you plan to crate train*, pet bed, chew toys, etc.

Definitely research the breed first. I love APBTs, but I wouldn't suggest them for everyone.
supplies: good sturdy water bowl, food bowl, collar, leash, rawhide chewies, toys, laser light, treats.

Directions: when you first bring home your puppy, take him outside at least every hour and take him to whatever door you want him to go to to let you know he's gotta go. Dogs learn by repetition so make sure you say, ';let's go potty'; and go to the door. When your dog goes outside and makes a potty, give him a treat and lots of praise. Dogs also need to chew, they don't do it to make you mad. Have chewies for your dog so he doesn't find your things to chew. Do not spank your puppy when he does something wrong. In a firm voice tell him, '; NO, Bad Dog.'; When he does something right, '; good boy'; and lots of treats. Spanking your dog only teaches him to fear your hands and that is never good. Once your puppy is about 3 months old then start with the sit, stay, lay down, and come. Have lots of patience and fun.
congrats!

1st and most important:

learn all u can about the breed, and DO DO DO def. be prepared to enroll in basic obedience classes somewhere near you asap as well. This will be crucial for you and your new dog's relationship, they are strong dogs and need to know basic obedience, especially with their bad rap, altho I love the breed as long as they arent trained to fight.

You want your new dog to be well socialized and be comfortable and well behaved around other people and dogs as well! the obedience classes are worth 100 times the initial cost in the long run and you dont want any bad habits to get started so be sure and do this.

basic supplies to get started:

quality dog feed (correct amts to feed will be listed on package-its based on age, weight etc)

food n water bowls

treats (great for rewarding good behavior and for use when training)

collar

ID tag with your info

leash (daily walks are more important than I even have words for-its super important!)

tennis balls

suitable chew toys-keep replacing them as needed..its better than having your doggy chew your stuff up, and MOST dogs love to chew!

a dog bed-can be fancy store bought OR any old comfy blankets you make into one;)

a LOT of PATIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think thats most of it and what you dont have you can pick up later on!

If you have any more questions Id be happy to try and help..have fun with your new best friend!:)

email: exoticbrdz@yahoo.com
thats a lot to ask for in a yahoo question.

there are plenty of websites to give you this info!!

Basics:

Nutrical or honey

crate (if you plan on crate training)

leash

collar

bed

blanket

toys

food

water

bowls

and the list goes on...
Buy plenty of chew toys for sure !!!!!!!! They love pig ears also. For food I fed mine were fed Purina Pro Plan and they did great. They are very smart dogs so just be patient with them.
Here is the basics:

Relationship: People tend to think in terms of Alpha and in humans that means hear me, I demand that you listen and will not listen to anything you say. Basically I will dominate you, I am your master.

With any living being, a dominant approach is not a good way to gain respect from your dog, it is a way for him to gain fear, and in terms of relationship, that is not what you want.

Instead, be your dogs guardian. His protector when he needs it, such as a leash on him so he cant run out into the road, but a loose leash.

The dog doesnt understand that you are protecting him at that point, so a treat is a must.

Each situation is different so make sure your dog knows what he needs to know. There is not set rule for what needs to be in a relationship, but in the relationship with your dog, see a child parent relationship or a friend/friend relationship, to avoid being disrespectful to your pack member. Even the alpha is respecting to other dogs.

Food: feed good quality food: not the crap found in the vets office or most of the foods in a grocery store.

www.dogfoodanalysis.com

Treats also need to be good quality.

Stick with similar brands of food for treats or make your own:

A few ides:

dehydrated liver

raw meaty bones

tripe(feed outside)

canned fish i.e. salmon, sardines, mackerel.

Feeding instructions will be on the bag, but I would feed three times a day until 8 months, then switch to twice a day until 18 months, then it is debatable if you want to feed once or twice a day.

I feed once, but I also feed raw prey model. I would feed twice a day if I fed kibble to my labs and my great dane would be fed three times a day.

Training:

You want to train any dog, but as the owner of a bad rep breed, you have even higher standards to live by. Your dog needs to be an ambassador for the breed and the only way to do that is to have the right owner. Make sure you are a good leader in terms of dogs/wolves, make sure you understand your dog and protect your dog. Just because he is a pit and male doesn't mean he is exempted from pack behavior. If the leadership is not shown by you, as any dog will, the dog will claim it to offer leadership, not to be alpha. Most dogs don't want alpha position, but they need it to survive and a dog not receiving leadership will be forced into leadership.

Here is an amazing site that explains a lot about dog pack behavior:

www.flyingdogpress.com (read the free articles, especially it takes a pack to raise a puppy)

Other basic items:

Leash(look into paco collars or karma-charms.com)

Collar

Bowls(water and if you feed kibble, food)

crate(leave door open for puppy to go in and out of during introduction. Treats are also good incentives for crate training)

Soft bed for crate

Toys(although for a teething pup, a raw meaty bone frozen is best)

Look into goughnuts as well(guaranteed to never break and will be replaced if ever broken for free)

Kongs are good toys as well(stuff with peanut butter and freeze it for a good long entertaining toy.

Stay away from rawhides and fake bones like greenies. Nothing good can come from something unnatural like those.
