This summer i want to go to Australia, need advice from people who have backpacked there?

i want to buy a one way ticket and go to Australia. Somewhere on the beach and where there are good people and nice hostels. The plane ticket costs about 1500 american dollars, i want to be there for atleast 2 weeks. I can survive 5-10 dollars a-day on food at the most. How much money do you think i will need? As a backpacker can i find an odd job somewhere to pick up cash? If someone w/ expierience can just tell me everything i need to know it would be awesome.This summer i want to go to Australia, need advice from people who have backpacked there?
You won't be able to get in on a one-way ticket. Some hostels will allow you to work for them for a few hours in exchange for a bed and dinner. Otherwise, fruitpicking on the east coast is a classic job for backpackers.

well ive lived in sydney my whole life =]


and i can honestly say it is the most expensive place in australia so i would say you would need to have atleast 10-15 dollars per day.
