Here's the problem:
My husband gets paid biweekly and I handle the finances. He told me he was going to look for a car today, and I said ok. I didn't know he meant he was going to buy a car today... lol. So that was a 500 dollar down payment I was NOT expecting, and he misunderstood me when we were explaining the finances. (oh well)
Anyway, I'm 36 weeks pregnant. So I really don't want to cook. I'm tired, I just want something where I don't really have to do anything. (I'm being honest, yes I am lazy right now.)
Here's the problem: my husband is on a low calorie diet and we are REALLY short on money right now.
I'm thinking the majority of my groceries are going to be low calorie sandwich supplies and corn flakes. Not sure, but it needs to be under $100 for this week. We usually spend 250 dollars for groceries every two weeks but that's not going to work.
What else do I get.. that's low calorie and not going to kill his diet.. fruits and veggies are great but we usually stick with V8 around the hard times because around here it cost about 4-5 dollars for an avocado.Need advice from people before I go grocery shopping.?

here are some cheap staples i swear by: rice (brown is best), beans, lentils, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas. you can do so many things with these items and they help to stretch your meals (and your budget). i also buy frozen veggies instead of fresh when i am short on $$. the prevailing theory is that the frozen are almost just as good (nutrient-wise).
Well if you actually eat real vegetables and fruits its more mass for your stomach to digest which would keep you fuller for longer. So in essence you would be spending the same amount of money if you spent more on real veggies because you would eat less.
if u cant buy fresh fruit and veggies cause of the price, u can still eat healthy if u buy the frozen stuff!! its cheaper and they usually dont take much effort, sit them on the counter to defrost and depending on the veggie you may need to microwave it. easy!
Make a delicious soup, always goes down well and what you don't eat you can freeze.:)
I think the best bet for you all at this time is beans. There are all kinds of great beans to choose from, and they are packed full of vitamins, protein, and fiber, as well as being low fat. I love those beans and rice packages that are so easy to fix. Red beans are my favorite, add a little sausage and you have a complete meal in one easy step. Tight budget and with a baby coming soon? You all will have to redo the finances again with the new house members arrival.
by bags of pasta. Super cheap!
Make buttered noodles.
Spaghetti is also cheap and easy.
Just keep the portions down.
Oatmeal is cheap too and will keep you full longer.
My favorite foods when I want a snack but don't want to get fat is a bowl of healthy cereal. Lots of good generics out there.
if you need fruits and veggies but can't afford the produce section, go for the dried fruits like raisins and apricots. They'll keep longer and you are getting a good source of fiber still.
Maybe it's time to apply for food stamps.
