I have read that there are paths to follow is this correct? as i cant map read!
Do i have to be able to map read?Thinking of climbing ben nevis, any advice please from people who have done it aswell.?
to the above, boll****. Far more people die on everest etc. etc... Some people have climbing accidents on the NE Face, but not on the tourist path. The biggest killer on the tourist route is middle aged heart attacks. Fact.
Being able to navigate will help you, unless you are lucky enough to have a totally clear day.
Go up glen nevis the day before, using the same map and have a walk up to Steal Falls, get used to orientating the map, so that the top points north. This will help on the summit. It is the 1st KM off the top where you need to be careful. As some of the gullies (gardyloo) cut in on the decent path and you need to do a short dog leg, which is very obvious in all but the worst mist, or white out conditions. Read up on the route so you know what to expect, plenty of books in the library.
Set off early (5 or 6am) in only the best weather, with a good forecast. Take it steady with plenty food and water you will be fine.
You could do a warm up over the weeks before you go, trying some little hills. These will help your legs and your map work.
Enjoy.Thinking of climbing ben nevis, any advice please from people who have done it aswell.?
